I know. You made a resolution to get fit in 2022, right? Nine times out of ten, people decide to start a fitness regime in the New Year.Well, don’t let me discourage you if I tell you that only 8% of people ever reach their New Year’s resolutions. And less than half of people are still trying past the end of January. But take heart. A resolution isn’t the same as a goal.
A resolution is a firm decision to do or not to do something. A goal is the point toward which effort is directed. It seems clear we should all make more goals. But did you know that 70% of people who set goals fail to achieve them. That’s a better average, but not good enough.
So how can you reach your goals?
Research found those who wanted to add a new habit in the new year were more successful than those who wanted to quit one. So instead of deciding for the new year, "I'm going to stop eating junk food," re-frame that goal as, "I'm going to eat more good food."
As well, if you focus on taking small steps it can keep you motivated. Writing down your goals might give you small milestones to aim for. And remember to reward yourself when you reach that small step. We do that in so many ways at TOPS.
Believe it or not, there's research that suggests making your goals vague is actually better than making them specific. That is, eating more healthy food is an easier commitment to maintain than setting a certain calorie limit or not eating ice cream. There will be setbacks, but that’s no reason to let one bad day or week keep you from fulfilling your goal.
A study found that people who saw the progress another person was making, felt more motivated to keep moving toward their goal. You might even tell your plan to the people closest to you, so they can help you get there.
