The New Year is often a time for helpful quotations and affirmations. We may have overindulged during the festivities of last year, maybe returned to old habits, but we can leave behind the things that don’t bring us happiness and good health, try something new, start over, do better.

I continue to see it as a crucial message for those of us who take medications but find it difficult to reach a healthy weight. Many of us take pills daily. So, it’s important to keep up with emerging clinical knowledge of their side effects.

Each week we bravely remove our shoes and glasses and step up on the scale and sometimes the numbers go up and sometimes the numbers go down. But we find that over the course of the year we approach a weight that lets us do more of the things we enjoy. As Plato said, “Never discourage anyone who continually makes progress, no matter how slow.” So, we set sensible goals with our health specialists, and take small steps.

Regrettably, our Mayne Island TOPS group currently lacks gender diversity. No, TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) isn’t only for women. Our magazine, TOPS News, and website, TOPS.org, are full of stories and pictures of folks who have reached a healthy weight goal, and they aren’t just women. But it’s not like all the Men -o’-Mayne are noticeably girth-free. So, do we not have a mystery here? Delving into the internet, I found some interesting ideas.

As a child I hated borscht. My parents loved it, so it appeared on the table quite often, along with large helpings of beet puns: Mom’s cooking can’t be beet.
I wish I had eaten more beets back then. I might have become an athlete, since some research indicates that dietary nitrates found in beets, or beetroot, may enhance athletic performance.
